What is the RJC?
The Residential Judicial Council is a student-run body founded with the
purpose of holding students accountable to students for violating
community standards. When students in our residential communities
are documented in incidents and charged with violations of the
Student Code of Conduct, the students involved may be summoned
to appear before a meeting council of the RJC. The council, by
majority vote, determines a student's responsibility for the alleged
violations of the Code and issues sanctions if appropriate.

I received an email RJC summons. What does
this mean?
You were documented as potentially violating University policy and were
charged with (a) violation(s) of the Georgetown University
Student Code of Conduct. The RJC office
has scheduled a meeting that you must attend. The meeting council
will adjudicate the charges, determine your responsibility for the alleged
violations, and issue sanctions if you are found responsible.

When can I view the Incident Report?
The Incident Report is available for viewing during
scheduled office hours. The RJC office
is in 529 Leavey Center, in the Office of Student Affairs.

What if I can't attend a scheduled meeting?
You are required to attend all scheduled meetings. The meeting may
take place and a decision may be rendered in your absence. Academic
conflicts are the only accepted excuses for rescheduling a meeting; such
exceptions must be approved by the Associate Director of the Office of
Residence Life.

May I bring a witness to my meeting?
Respondents may bring up to two witnesses to their meeting, provided they
notify the RJC at judicialcouncil@georgetown.edu before the
meeting date. The witnesses must testify to the facts of the
incident; character witnesses are not allowed.

Who sits on the council?
Each individual meeting council generally consists of five members: one
student chair, three permanent representatives, and one administrator, usually a hall
director. Each council member has an equal vote; a simple majority
is required for determination of responsibility and approving sanctions.

What happens if I am found responsible for a
violation?
If you are found responsible for one or more violations of the Student
Code of Conduct, the council will determine an appropriate sanction for
the violation of the University's community standards. The Chair
will write a Notice of Administrative Action letter to you describing the
council's reasoning and detailing your sanction within one week from the
date of the meeting. You are then responsible for completing the
sanction as stipulated by the council. The Administrative Action letter
will be available via email within one week from the hearing date.

How do I pay a fine and complete my work sanction
hours?
Instructions are attached to the Administrative Action letter. Fines
must be paid by the date specified in the letter and may be paid
10:00am-12:00pm and 2:00pm-4:00pm, Monday-Thursday and by appointment only
on Friday. To complete a work sanction, you must obtain a work
sanction form from the Assistant Director of Student Conduct.
Please follow all instructions carefully, especially if you are graduating
or studying abroad next semester.

May I appeal a decision of the RJC?
All appeals are handled through the Office of Student Conduct, in a
process described in the Student Handbook. (Appeals of
RJC actions follow the procedure for appeals of administrative actions.)
An appeal may be requested on the basis of substantial disproportionate
sanction, new evidence of a substantive nature not available at the time
of the original decision, or substantial procedural error. A
Statement of Appeal (typed, double-spaced, no more than five pages in
length) must be filed with the Office of Student Conduct within seven
calendar days of the date on the Notice of Administrative Action letter.
